It Was The First To Celebrate Veterans Day

Birmingham was the first city in the country to be able to celebrate Veterans Day. This is mainly due to the fact that Raymond Weeks, a veteran from Birmingham, Alabama urged the President to allow the country to celebrate a day in honor of the war veterans. 

When the President allowed the holiday to occur, Weeks lead the Veteran’s Day parade in Birmingham. Weeks was given the Presidential Citizens Medal for his role in making Veterans Day a recognized holiday in 1982.

It Holds The Largest Cast Iron Statue In The World

The city symbol, the Roman God Vulcan, the god of fire and forge is depicted in a 56-foot tall statue. This statue is the tallest cast-iron statue in the world and represents Birmingham’s roots in the industries of iron and steel. The statue is located in a park. Although the statue is similar to the Statue of Liberty in New York, you can not go inside the statue.
